Repairs: In-House or Outsourced?

Very few expenses escape the critical eye of the budget-cutters. Equipment repairs by in-house maintenance staff can be under more scrutiny than other aspects of business, even though maintenance tasks are essential for preserving a budget and saving money long-term.

At one time, facilities assigned maintenance tasks to internal staff, but this has changed. Now, outsourcing equipment repairs to the manufacturer or a specialized repair house is considered a more budget-conscious choice for many facilities.

Pumps, valves and similar equipment can be maintained by an outside vendor, allowing for a smaller maintenance staff in-house.

Expertise also comes into play: there are hundreds (if not thousands) of equipment models and manufacturers. It’s tough for an individual maintenance person to have a comprehensive knowledge of every maintenance manuals and be skilled technicians for every model. Outsourcing can mean that an expert repairs specialized equipment, while in-house technicians can focus on daily tasks.
