Weld Inserts

C-22® weld insert rings are used for additional alloying when orbital or manual welding AL-6XN® in the field. For most AL-6XN piping systems, the process of post-weld annealing is not feasible. In order to improve corrosion resistance of these welds the practice of adding an alloy filler is required. The ring must have a higher molybdenum content than the AL-6XN alloy to compensate for alloys dilution on cooling.

CSI stocks a large selection of AL-6XN tubing and fittings for applications that require greater corrosion resistance than 316L.

FAQs

What Is Consumable Insert Welding?

Consumable insert welding is a process that uses a precision-machined ring placed between two tube ends before welding. The insert becomes part of the finished weld and helps improve penetration, consistency, and corrosion resistance.

What Are CSI Consumable Weld Inserts Used For?

CSI Consumable Weld Inserts are commonly used when welding AL-6XN tubing and fittings. The C-22 insert adds alloying elements to the weld zone to help maintain corrosion resistance when post-weld annealing is not practical.

Why Are C-22 Consumable Inserts Used with AL-6XN?

During welding, alloy dilution can reduce the corrosion resistance of AL-6XN welds. A Hastelloy C-22 consumable insert provides higher molybdenum content to compensate for this dilution and improve the finished weld’s performance.

Are These Consumable Inserts Suitable for Orbital Welding?

Yes. CSI consumable weld inserts are designed for both orbital and manual GTAW welding, making them well suited for hygienic process piping systems that require consistent, high-quality welds.

What Sizes Are Available?

CSI offers consumable weld inserts for tubing sizes from 1/2 inch to 4 inches OD. Standard thickness is 0.065 inch for sizes 1/2 inch through 3 inches and 0.083 inch for 4-inch tubing.

Which Applications Benefit from Consumable Insert Welding?

Consumable insert welding is commonly used in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food processing, dairy, beverage, and chemical applications where corrosion resistance and weld integrity are critical.
