The customer's corporate research and development facility in New Jersey was referred to CSI when they needed an HTST skid for scalable testing of various products, some requiring PMO compliance. Prior to contacting CSI regarding their testing, the customer used an unreliable method of pasteurizing their ice cream mixes. Even though the mixes were not used for human consumption, they could not guarantee the product had been properly pasteurized. This meant they could not guarantee that scaling up of the process to a plant level would produce the desired results.

The unit was completely CIP’able and designed for PMO sealing by state inspectors in the future, if desired.

The customer contacted CSI to develop a pilot-scale high temperature short time (HTST) unit to properly pasteurize their R&D products. The unit was built to 3-A and PMO standards and included a pilot balance tank, boost pump, pasteurizer with heating, regeneration and cooling section, legal hold tube, differential pressure monitoring, and a PLC cabinet with a separate PLC for the legal portion of the system.

The resulting system could be used to reliably predict the outcome of various mixes and flavors when the process was scaled up for their larger facilities. The unit was completely CIP’able and designed for PMO sealing by state inspectors in the future, if desired.
