Alfa Laval LKH Self-Priming Pumps

The LKH Prime from Alfa Laval is an efficient, versatile, and hygienic self-priming pump. Its design was based on the market-leading LKH family and shares many of the same features. Add in that it can easily and efficiently pump fluids with entrained air, and you have a CIP power house.

The LKH Prime uses advanced design and air screw technology to meet the most stringent requirements commonly found in food, dairy, beverage, home and personal care. These industries insist that pump be versatile and able to perform in the toughest applications.

Application

The LKH Prime is a highly efficient self-priming pump, which meets 3-A Sanitary Standards. The ability to evacuate air from the suction pipe—combined with a low noise level and high pumping efficiency—makes the LKH Prime ideal for tank emptying and CIP return applications; and, with verified effective CIP cleanability, LKH Prime can be used as a product pump as well.

Operating principle

On applications where the pumped media contains a mixture of air and liquid in the suction line, air-screw rotation causes the formation of a continuous liquid ring within the canister. Due to the eccentric position of the canister relative to the air-screw, an air chamber forms between the liquid ring and the air-screw, which separates into air pockets between the air-screw vanes.

The continuous rotation of the air-screw forces air pockets through the canister into the suction stage of the impeller; they are then pumped out via the discharge. Liquid is returned from the discharge via the re-circulation pipe into the canister to ensure the liquid ring is maintained at all times. When there is no air present, the canister and recirculation loop have no function and are fully filled with liquid. The liquid passes through the canister into the suction stage of the impeller, allowing the pump to act as a traditional centrifugal pump.

Standard design

Based on the LKH, the LKH Prime is designed to be cleaned in place. Unlike conventional self-priming pumps the LKH Prime has an impeller which can be trimmed for any application.

Shaft seals

The LKH Prime is equipped with either an external single or a double mechanical shaft seal. Both have stationary seal rings made from stainless steel AISI 329 with sealing surface in silicon carbide and rotating seal rings in carbon as standard.

Construction

Alfa Laval LKH Prime is a self-priming pump based on air-screw technology. It offers excellent operational efficiency, reducing energy consumption. The pump achieves capacities of up to 308 gpm and pressures of up to 56 psig. The pump shares many common components with the Alfa Laval LKH pump range including the impeller, which can be trimmed to optimize pump performance according to its application. Dedicated components include the airscrew, casing, re-circulation pipe and cover.
